Houston dog adoption & rescues

1. Houston Pets Alive!

2800 Antoine Dr #2854, Houston, TX 77092

Houston Pets Alive (HPA) is on a mission to find at-risk cat and dog companions loving homes. They act as a safety net for local shelters like BARC and Harris County Animal Control, so more vulnerable pets can have the life they deserve.

Adoptive parents rave about this dog rescue organization in Houston for its professionalism and thorough process. Prospective pet parents can meet dogs only during weekly Saturday adoption events from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. An application must be filled out prior to attending the event and the adoption fee is $199.

2. Houston SPCA

7007 Old Katy Rd, Houston, TX 77024

Houston SPCA has been a staple in the community, finding homes for millions of animals.

They stick to a zero cruelty tolerance policy, rescuing pups who have been abused and neglected and giving them another chance at life. And it's not only dogs and cats that this animal welfare group rescues—they have bunnies, horses, and farm animals looking for loving homes, too.

The adoption center is open every day from 11 a.m.- 6 p.m, and there is no waitlist or appointment necessary. Their requirements for adoption are less stringent than other Houston rescues, requiring only a current photo ID proving that you're 18+ years old, have approval from all adults living in your household, and cash or a credit card to pay the adoption fee (between $145 to $195 based on the age of the dog).

3. BARC Animal Shelter & Adoptions

3300 Carr St, Houston, TX 77026

This Houston dog adoption facility is the only one in the city that is required to accept all animals, regardless of health conditions, temperament, breed, or circumstance.

Aspiring pet parents can adopt Tuesday through Sunday from 12-5 p.m., on a first come, first serve basis. If you find a pet you like, you can head to the Adoption Lobby to fill out an application. If no further information is needed, you may be able to leave with your new family member that same day. The adoption fee is $50.

4. Special Pals Rescue Resource Center

3830 Greenhouse Rd, Houston, TX 77084

Special Pals has been helping pets find homes since 1979. Last year, more than 1,500 animals at the shelter found their forever families.

Those interested in adopting a dog from Special Pals can visit between 12-4 p.m. seven days a week. You must complete the application, be 18 years or older, bring a photo ID, proof of landlord approval (if you rent), and proof that other animals in your home are vaccinated and on heartworm prevention medication. Adoption fees range between $80-$250.

107 E 22nd St, Houston, TX 77008

As the city's only LEED-certified animal shelter, Friends For Life is committed to providing a clean, comfortable space for Houston pets in need.

Adoptive parents must be 21+ years of age, bring a photo ID, have approval to have a pet from where you live, and the resources necessary to care for an animal. Once you complete the application, you'll interview with an Adoption Counselor. If approved, you'll do a one-week trial with your chosen pup, and if that's successful, you'll pay the $95 fee and the adoption will be finalized.
